Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) will withdraw from providing healthcare in several East Midlands prisons, following criticism over its care of Valdo Calocane, who killed three people in Nottingham. The decision, announced by NHFT, stems from a damning Care Quality Commission (CQC) report and a need to focus on internal improvements.
From July 1st, Practice Plus Group will take over healthcare at HMP Fosse Way. Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will assume responsibility for prisons in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, beginning with HMP Lowdham Grange in mid-July 2025.
The CQC identified “errors, omissions and misjudgements” in the care provided to Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic. NHFT cited difficulties recruiting staff and maintaining quality improvements as factors in the decision. The trust assures a “smooth transition” and confirms Rampton Hospital services are unaffected.
NHFT maintains it is making “clear progress” in areas like risk assessment and discharge procedures, and is focused on improving patient engagement. The CQC recently issued a ‘notice of proposal’ regarding concerns at HMP Lowdham Grange, prompting NHFT to implement changes to staffing, governance, and waiting lists.
